Atherosclerosis,
sometimes called “hardening of the arteries,” occurs when fat (cholesterol)
and calcium build up in the inner lining of the arteries, forming a substance
called plaque. Over time, the fat and calcium buildup narrows the artery
and blocks blood flow through it. |

Diabetes
is a disorder of metabolism. In people with diabetes, the pancreas either
produces little or no insulin, or the cells do not respond appropriately
to the insulin that is produced. Glucose then builds up in the blood, overflows
into the urine, and passes out of the body. Thus, the body loses its main
source of fuel even though the blood contains large amounts of glucose. |

Fibromyalgia
is a chronic disorder that causes widespread pain and tenderness in the
muscles and soft tissue as well as sleep problems, fatigue, and other symptoms.
Fortunately, the condition does not permanently damage the muscles, joints,
or internal organs. Fibromyalgia is a syndrome of chronic pain, not a disease
or a psychological disorder. |
